Collier & Manley 2012 Collation 1.6 - 1.8
23rd January 2012
1. mAa-xrw:
C&M write mAa-xrw with a hyphen, and I have amended any
below that are without a hyphen.
BUT, not everyone transliterates with
a hyphen, so mAa xrw is not wrong (just doesn't look right to me!)
In response to a question below and some other translations:
When a deceased person reached the Hall of Judgement they recited the
'Negative Confession' (a list of wrongdoings that they were not guilty
of) and their heart was weighed against the Feather of Maat (Maat =
truth).
If they were found to have spoken with a 'true voice' and were
found to be free of wrongdoing (justified) they passed on to become one
of the blessed dead.
So, mAa-xrw is translated as 'true of voice' or
'justified' (not both) referring to their assumed success!
mAa-rw is
not, therefore, a title and it could be applied to any deceased person.
2. Plurals:
Originally plural nouns were written with the quail chick
and the three strokes.
However, the quail chick was frequently omitted
if this is the case then C&M put the 'w' in brackets to show that it
is missing, eg Apd(w).
Other people don't usually put the brackets in
because the three strokes on their own became 'the normal' writing of
the plural.
It is important that you put the 'w' in if the word is
plural, but it does not matter whether you put brackets in or not if
the quail chick is missing (as long as the three strokes are there).
(There is more about plurals in Chapter 2).
3. MdC.
Be careful with reading the transliteration font in C&M
sometimes I think one needs a magnifying glass!
The most common
mistake is to read h with a line under it (X) for the h with a half
circle under it (x).
4. Exercise 1.7 xpS n kA n snbi mAa-xrw = A foreleg for the ka of Senbi
Some of you added extras, eg An offering of, a foreleg of ox, etc.
This
is what the caption means, but it is not what it actually says.
Sorry,
I am being nit-picky here, but it is important you don't stray from the
'written word' in later exercises.
If you really feel the urge to put
extra words in, then put them in brackets to show they are not
actually there!

mAz-xrw translates as either, so you would
have either 'true of voice' or 'justified' not both.

1.6:
a. nDs iqr?An excellent man (person). [I am assuming that the
double consonant?wr?means great/important and
not bad, week or little
(based on the preposition iqr). This is the reason I chose "excellent
man/person].
wr = G36 (B22 in C&M) a swallow; bin = G37 (B21 in C&M)
a sparrow.
Be careful with these two birds they are almost
identical, the difference is that the sparrow has a rounded tail!
Here
it is the sparrow - a determinative meaning small, weak or pathetic:
nDs = a person, but a lowly person or a commoner!
The sparrow can also
be a determinative meaning bad, but not when used with nDs.
I think I
am correct in saying that the swallow (the phonetic wr) is rarely used
as a determinative Gardiner gives the example mnt = swallow which is
probably the only example of G36 used as a determinative.
b. sxr iqr?An excellent plan.
c. Hna snbi?With Senbi.
d. r pqr?at Pqr /to Pqr (Poker).
1.7:

justified.
mAa-xrw
amaA r Apd(w) in snbi mAa qrw?Throwing at (the) birds by Senbi
the justified.
No need to put 'the' in brackets it is not missing, the AEs just
didn't have a word for it.
Question: What is the significance of the title, `the justified'?
Was
it for anyone or just important people?
